Seeking Community Engagement Coordinator

LOCATION:  Columbia, SC

The Palmetto Cycling Coalition (PCC) is looking for a highly motivated, talented individual to assist in communications and state campaigns, coordinate and grow the Coalition’s donor/member program and databases, and develop and grow our bike safety education and local advocacy programs. The position is 30 hours/week. People of color encouraged to apply.

PCC is a small, statewide non-profit organization, operating in existence for over 20 years. We are the primary organization in South Carolina advocating for biking and walking at the state level. Our mission is to make South Carolina bicycle and pedestrian friendly, by improving safety through better access and education, to promote healthy lifestyles and livable and economically viable communities. We are a lean and highly motivated organization. Our main programs currently are our state Multimodal Policy campaign, a legislative agenda on Vulnerable Roadway Users (H.3615), and our Safe Streets Save Lives bike safety education campaign. Our organization also has extensive experience growing grassroots leaders in local bike/walk movements, and we anticipate returning to this work soon.

General position responsibilities currently include donor & member database management, donor and public communications, and campaign support. As the position evolves, additional responsibilities will include educational program development, teaching, and program evaluation. The position reports to the Executive Director and will occasionally work closely with board members when managing the donor database and working with them on occasional donor renewal campaigns.

Specific job responsibilities:

  1. Campaign support: (~15 hrs) In support of the grant funded state Multimodal state policy campaign and SC Livable Communities Alliance (PCC is lead facilitator of the partnership and Steering Committee leading the campaign), assist the ED in conducting some grassroots outreach around the state, setting up and facilitating small and large meetings in state legislative districts, key to the campaign. This local outreach will focus on local stories, including those directly related to equity, that bridge relevance to our state policy. This will also be done with direct assistance from our campaign and equity consultant.
  2. Communications: (~5 hrs) Occasionally edit or write e-newsletter copy and populate social media accounts with relevant and timely campaign content, in coordination with the Executive Director, with help from some volunteers
  3. Donor/member management: (~10 hrs) Manage an integrated network of member data, including data entry and donation processing; manage the membership database and renewal system (eTapestry, Blackbaud), ensuring its accuracy; manage new and existing emails (Constant Contact); create monthly membership reports, and occasionally assist in the growth of new members in coordination with efforts of the Executive Director (ED) and the Board of Directors;
  4. Education program:  At this time, this position is limited to 30 hours; however, there is potential for education program content to become part of a final 10 hrs / week of this job.  If additional funds are successfully obtained, we envision 10 additional hours of this position to serve the following role:  1) teach occasional bike safety education courses to adults and families around the state, in a new and evolving program, at various outlets including but not limited to some YMCA’s, National Safety Council training of trainers for Defensive Driving Courses on bike law, and others as they develop, 2) assist the ED in further developing the program, and over time, take the lead broadly, to include but not limited to these: curricula modifications, seeking and finding additional outlets and opportunities, and program evaluation, 3) over time, grow a contact list for future bike/ped local advocacy groups, focusing on anything locally relevant, including advocacy, campaigns, candidate forums, Safe Routes to School, etc.
