Spring & Summer 2012 Charity Rides

The PCC Tour de Cure Team
As it gets warmer, we move into the time of year when many cyclists are looking to get the cobwebs out of their legs and benefit worthwhile organizations to boot. We’ve compiled this list of charity rides throughout the state over the next few months to help you build up your ride calendar.
Ride for the Inlet. March 25. This rain-or-shine recreational ride allows cyclists to relax and take in the beauty of rural Horry county on either a metric century, 26-mile or 8 mile ride. Proceeds benefit Murrells Inlet 2020, an organization dedicated to making the Inlet a better place to live, work and visit through efforts like creating a master plan to make the Business 17 bike lanes safer.
After the Bridge Run Ride. April 1. Leave your running shoes at home and join the Trek Bicycle Store of Mount Pleasant and Coastal Cyclists for a beautiful ride from Awendaw Green and the Sewee Outpost through Charleston and Berkeley counties. This Coastal Cyclists mainstay features 100, 62.5, 45, 33, 25 and 10 mile routes, and families and tandems are welcome. Celebrate the ride afterward with food, beverages, and live music!
Taylor Feda Memorial Ride. April 14. Beginning at Dutch Fork High School in Irmo, this ride seeks to celebrate the life of Taylor Feda while also raising money to fund a nursing and literary scholarship in Taylor’s name. The ride features a metric century around Lake Monticello, a 40 mile ride to Little Mountain, a 25 mile ride through the country, or a 5 mile family fun ride.

Try Charleston. April 21. For those athletes for whom bicycling just isn’t enough, there is Try Charleston, featuring half and sprint routes to tailor the event to your skill level. Beyond promoting a healthier and more active community, the triathlon also raises funds for wellness programs in Charleston County Elementary Schools, swimming programs in at-risk communities, Meeting Street Academy, the Disabilities Foundation, and the Care Camps Program.

Wheels for Meals. April 28. Enjoy scenic, low traffic Upstate foothill roads over either a 25, 40, 62 or a new 100 mile route through Tryon and Saluda as you support Meals on Wheels in Greenville. Beginning and ending at Furman University, the ride will feature a recovery feast provided by the chefs of Soby’s.
Issaqueena’s Last Ride. April 28. Benefiting Safe Harbor and one part of the Blue Ridge Double, this challenging ride offers 32, 61 or century routes. The longer two rides tour through the foothills of the Blue Ridge, but all the routes are hilly with grades reaching up to 14%. For those who brave this difficult ride, SAG support and a post-ride meal will be offered.
Tour de Cure. May 5. Fight diabetes with this year’s Tour de Cure in Little Mountain. Designed for both avid and novice cyclists, this ride offers a choice between routes of 100, 65, 30, or 15 miles, or a 10 mile family fun ride. Join the Palmetto Cycling Coalition team and join with your fellow PCC members riding towards a cure!
Aiken to Ride Century. May 6. Explore Aiken on either a century, metric century, half century or 25 mile route in the 27th edition of this ride. This year’s edition benefits Helping Hands, the Edward Richardson Ride veterans will be please to know that the route features a repaved State Park Rd, removing the Paris-Roubaix-like elements of the ride.

Tour de Midlands. May 12. Presented by the Community Open Land Trust to benefit the Lexington Greenways Alliance, this ride winds through some of the most beautiful areas of the midlands. Choose from a 15, 30, 72 or 102 mile route to find the challenge that best suits you.
Ride of Silence. May 16. An international event to honor those lost or killed riding in the previous year, and 2012 marks a decade of the powerful gatherings. We will post more information about rides throughout South Carolina as we receive more information and get closer to Bike Month.
Assault on Marion. May 21. Registration for the Assault on Mt Mitchell may be closed, but many top athletes are choosing to instead test their skills during the Assault on Marion. Though this 74.2 mile route does not make the trip to the top of the mountain, it does take participants over many rolling hills and climbs through beautiful North Carolina scenery. After the ride, join the Spartanburg Freewheelers and other participants at a lunch to watch the Mt Mitchell riders make their final assault.

Stars and Stripes Challenge. May 28. Join the Palmetto Peloton Project for a fun day benefiting cancer research, outreach and advocacy. Participants will ride the same roads cyclists train on year-round in the Upstate, sandwiched between the USA Cycling Pro Time Trial and Road Race Championships.

24 Hours of Booty. July 27-28. As usual, registration for Charlotte’s 24 Hours of Booty ride to fight cancer was full within 24 hours of opening. But if you missed your chance, don’t despair! You can still sign up for the Reboot to ride from 10am to 7pm on July 28. If you’re not up to such a time commitment on your bike just yet, you can still make the trip to Myers Park to volunteer, donate, or just cheer everyone on!

Also in Charlotte over the next few months are the April 1 New Belgium Brewing Urban Assault Ride, the April 28 Peak 10 University City Duathlon, Cycle for Life benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on July 21, and BIKE! Charlotte, a 17-day event beginning April 27 designed to help Charlotte citizens incorporate bicycles into their daily lives.
