Rescheduled: Community Resilience Photo Tour Kickoff In Orangeburg!

SEP 5, 2018, by Corrine Reed

(ORANGEBURG, SC, October 2018) On Thursday, October 25 from 5pm – 8pm, the SC Livable Communities Alliance (SCLCA) will host a presentation of their Community Resilience photo tour.  The event will be at the Orangeburg Fine Arts Center’s temporary location at 1099 Russell Street Orangeburg SC 29115.

This free event will feature photography from South Carolina artist, Michael Dantzler, which showcases communities across South Carolina.  Dantzler captures the successes and limitations of South Carolina’s infrastructure through his photography.

The SCLCA is a campaign spearheaded by 8 statewide organizations in South Carolina, including The Palmetto Cycling Coalition, Eat Smart Move More SC, AARP South Carolina, the American Heart Association, the South Carolina Alliance of YMCAs, Able SC, the Coastal Conservation League, and the SC Disability and Health Project.

SC had the #1 highest traffic fatality rate in the USA in 2017, and ranked 3rd and 5th worst in pedestrian and bike fatality rates.  70% of SC roads are state-owned, and most fatalities of people walking (96%) and bicycling (94%) happen on these roads.  This shows that, to reduce injuries and fatalities in South Carolina, state level action is needed.

SCLCA’s goal is to pass a complete streets policy in the South Carolina Department of Transportation.  Complete streets, or multimodal streets, ensure that everyone, regardless of age, ability, or transportation method, can get around safely.  Michael Dantzler’s photography highlights why this policy is necessary.

Join the SC Livable Communities Alliance and the Orangeburg Fine Arts Center for free heavy hors d’oeurves and a photography presentation to explore the question, “what makes a community thrive?”.  Guests are encouraged to RSVP on Facebook.
