Mission & Vision

Our mission is serving South Carolina communities by advocating at the state level for safe, connected mobility choices.  Our vision is a South Carolina where biking and walking are safe and accessible for all.

The Palmetto Cycling Coalition has been serving South Carolina for 27 years as a statewide organization bringing together individuals and organizations passionate about creating safer roads, streets, and trails. Over the course of almost three decades, the organization has experienced incredible success in meeting the mission and growing its base of support all while evolving to meet the needs of South Carolina. As we reflect on the past, including our most recent history living through the pandemic, it is clear the evolution as an organization will continue. Through this growth, our organization will maintain a deep commitment to working as an ADVOCATE to ensure EVERYONE is safe when getting from point A to point B.

The Dangerous By Design 2022 Report revealed that not only is South Carolina third in the nation for pedestrian fatalities but that our State’s numbers are steadily increasing over time. The need for a statewide organization focused on addressing this crisis is greater than ever. Our board and staff are committed to growing our organizational capacity to serve the state, its local partners, and individuals passionate about a safer SC. We will continue to build a strong advocacy platform, support communities in the adoption of Complete Streets, and act as a convener for local groups across the state.

There will be an even stronger focus on ensuring that the lived experience of those MOST negatively impacted by unsafe pedestrian and bicycling conditions are centered in our work. Race and socioeconomic status are directly related to the ability of an individual to safely use roads; Black & Indigenous Americans are more likely to die walking than any other race and a disproportionate number of deaths occur in under-resourced communities. These issues are complex, systemic, and extend beyond our sector, requiring a broader network of support. Through the facilitation of the SC Alliance for Livable Communities, the incredible power of cross-sector collaboration and partnership is undeniable. Our organization will deepen these relationships, continue to explore synergies between organizations, and strengthen the connectivity throughout the state.

We approach these problems through:

  • Advocacy
  • Education and resources to support communities and organizations in adopting Complete Streets and beyond
  • Convening
  • Community engagement

And we utilize these strategies to achieve solutions:

  1. Strengthen organizational health including the centering of racial and socio-economic equity, diversity, inclusion and access in the organizational operations, systems, and programs.
  2. Increase diverse representation in the SC bicycle and pedestrian advocacy movement.
  3. Improve opportunities and connectivity across South Carolina
  4. Grow local access and opportunity for bicycling and walking with a focus on communities facing the most collisions.
  5. Increase awareness and understanding of the organization.
