Spring/Summer Rides Benefitting SC Charities
Get on your bike for a good cause with some of these great rides coming up over the next few months. Follow our calendar for information about more charity rides as we hear about them. Did we miss one? Email us and let us know!
SPEED Ride Benefiting Special Ed at Wando HS – April 9. Charity bicycle ride to benefit the Special Education students at Wando High School. Proceeds to help fund educational programs facing funding cutbacks at Wando HS for the students with learning and physical challenges. Three distance options – 10, 25 or 62.5 (Metric Century) mile rides. Food, fun, silent auction, prize raffle, and music after the ride.
Spring Fling 5K Run or Bike Event – April 9. Celebrate the warmer weather with the Pickens County YMCA’s Spring Fling. This downtown Easley race will also feature a free Easter Egg Run for younger children. The Spring Fling benefits the Share the Spirit Scholarship Fund, which supports afterschool programs, summer day camps, youth sports and more!
PT Biking – April 16. Bring your family and your bike and ride along the Rediversion Canal and the Lake Moultrie Passage of the Palmetto Trail. Afterwards enjoy a BBQ lunch and entertainment at Russellville Landing. All proceeds will go towards improving the Palmetto Trail, a project of the Palmetto Conservation Foundation.
Tour de Lake Bicycle Rally – April 23. Celebrate Earth Day on your bike by taking part in the Tour de Lake, hosted by the Rotary Club of Lake Murray – Irmo. Starting in Saluda Shoals Park, the festivities will include several different route choices including a century, as well as a family ride and post tour gathering. Proceeds will benefit the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
TryCharleston – April 30. TryCharleston promotes physical fitness and wellness, as well as a healthy lifestyle, through this half and sprint triathlon.This event benefits the Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy, an organization which provides pastoral care and counseling for employees and families of law enforcement and emergency service agencies, as well as the general public.
Aiken to Ride Century – May 1. Annual ride hosted by the Aiken Bicycle Club, to benefit the PCC and Helping Hands of Aiken. 100, 62, and 25 mile routes available.
Tour de Cure – May 7. Celebrate 20 years of riding strong in 2011! The Tour de Cure benefits the American Diabetes Association and will start at the Little Mountain Reunion Park. The ride is designed for novice and avid bicyclists alike and features a variety of routes to choose from. Check out the list of upcoming training rides to prepare!
Pathways Connect Century – May 7. Join us a beautiful ride through our lowcountry barrier islands. Rides are fully sagged and have rest stops every 15 to 20 miles. Lunch will be provided from 11 AM until 3 PM. 100, 62, 30, and 15 mile rides to benefit Friends of the Beaufort County Rail Trail.
Tour de Midlands – May 14. This ride’s four routes all starting at Lexington High School showcase some of the most beautiful terrain the midlands has to offer; those tackling the 102 mile course will ride along the Parr Reservoir and all the way around Lake Murray. The ride benefits the Lexington Greenways Alliance, which works to conserve, protect and manage natural resources and areas for sustainable use by future generations.
H20480 – May 22. A ride to benefit Partners in Health and their efforts to bring clean drinking water to Haiti. For more information, contact Joseph Boggs.
2011 Stars and Stripes Challenge – May 29. Take a break from watching the USA Professional Cycling Time Trial and Road Race to fight cancer Memorial Day Weekend. The ride will be held at Gateway Park in Travelers Rest on the roads frequented year-round by cyclists. The Stars and Stripes Challenge benefits cancer research, outreach and advocacy, and incentives are available for the top fundraisers.
A Ride to Remember – July 15-17. Cross-state bicycle ride to benefit the South Carolina chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. The 3-day, 250+ mile cross-state ride begins in the Upstate and ends at the South Carolina coast.
24 Hours of Booty – July 29-30. The “Booty Loop” in Charlotte will once again be home to cyclists riding as either individuals or teams for a full 24 hours. The original home of 24 Hours of Booty, this 2.97 mile course in Myers Park will be packed with food and entertainment to keep the party going all weekend! This ride benefits the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Levine Cancer Institute.
Also, the second annual William Wilson Memorial 5k Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, August 20. Proceeds from this event benefit the PCC and the William Wilson Scholarship Fund. Stay tuned to the PCC and the WW5k website for news as it becomes available!
